The Sock Monkey
When I was little, my mom and I went to the toy store. I saw a sock monkey.
" Please, can I buy the sock monkey?" I stomped my foot and whined.
" Yes, but next time use your own money, Madi," said mom and dad.
The moment I got home, I rushed up out of the car and started to play with my new dolly. The moment I got to my backyard I heard my sock monkey talking. He said, "Hello! My name is Martin."
I paused. Then I screamed, " Mommy! Daddy!"
They rushed to me and asked, "What's wrong?"
"My monkey is speaking to me!" I said.
"Silly, your toys can't talk."
So I replied, "You're right. Toys can't talk..." And they went inside.
Just then my sock monkey asked, "So what's your name?" I was about to scream but the sock monkey said, "It's okay, just tell me your name."
" Madison, but my friends call me Madi." I said.
"Hi Madi," he said.
And I said, "Hi, Martin! I think we are gonna have fun adventures and be great friends!"
Then I went downstairs and said to my parents, "Mom, Dad! Let's get a friend for sock monkey, Martin!"

True Descendant
Jemma (POV)
My name is Jemma. I'm 14. I live in the kingdom of Herodius. My favorite thing to do regularly is riding my 3 shadow headed dragon, Lucifer, around different kingdoms. My parents are the rulers of the highest kingdom there in the underworld, so that makes me the princess of the underworld. I live in my own small house 5 blocks away from the kingdom that my parents gave me when I was 12.
The underworld and the overworld had a battle between the mortals on Earth during 2015 , and now life is dangerous. It's sad that not one of my parents are Gods like Hades and Zeus, that's why I wish I could be the true descendant of the Gods, not like those wretched kids Daisy (the daughter of Zeus) and Cole (the son of Hades). This way I could survive the dangers of the world as an immortal.
Someday I will go and leave my kingdom (because you are allowed to leave a kingdom without permission) and go visit either Hades or Zeus. I need to find out who I truly am. You see, I'm adopted.
Once I asked my father who raised me, "Do you know who my birth parents are?"
He then replied, "no I don't remember exactly but I know your birth mom was a mortal."
There was still a 50% chance for my father to be immortal.
The day came when I decided to sum up the courage to visit Zeus. I asked him, "Please, make me a promise. Let me be a true descendant of the gods. "
Zeus nodded, "On one condition. You must abandon your past and family. You can keep the dragon."
I woke up suddenly. I was in my own room, with Lucifer sleeping beside me. I quickly got out of bed and ran to the kingdom gates. Before I could open the door, my father greeted me. "Hello, niece!"
"What niece?" I asked, shocked and confused. He told me that I was his neice, daughter of Hades, and sister of Cole.
I realized something was wrong.
I then went back to Zeus and told him the whole story. Zeus the un-did the spell and my life went back to normal as usual.
I now know who I truly am and I wouldn't change it for the world.

The Golf Tournament
Paul was about to tee off when his trainer Mr. Jason arrived and said "Why are you playing today you are suppose to be in school?"
Paul answered “ I am not going to school today because I am going to practice for a big tournament. Do you want to train with me?”
Mr. Jason answered “sure”.
Hole 1
Paul picked up his driver & hit his ball, whack! Paul’s ball flew about two hundred ninety yards before landing on the green. Paul’s ball stopped right before the hole. Paul putted and the ball missed the hole.
"It's too hot, that's why I missed that shot." Paul explained. He putted the ball one more time as the ball fell into the hole.
Hole 4
Paul walked to the tee box of hole #4. It was so hot & windy. Paul asked his caddie to buy him Gatorade in the tee house while he hit his ball. He hit his ball whoosh! Paul’s ball landed on the fairway of hole #8. Paul walked to his ball, did 2 practice swings then hit his ball.whack! The ball flew and landed in the water hazard, splash! Paul walked to the water hazard to check if he could still hit his ball. Paul could not see his ball because the water was so dark and deep. Paul took a ball from his pocket & dropped it on the fairway. Paul was penalized by 1 stroke. He hit his ball and it flew, landing on the green. Paul was about to putt his ball when he heard thunder BOOM.
"Do you still want to continue the game?" Mr. Jason asked.
"Yes," Paul nodded. He putt the ball into the hole.
It began to rain. They walked to the tee house and ordered hotdogs. They talke about Paul's swing, and when the rain stopped, they played again.
Hole 9
"It is hot!" complained Paul while walking to the tee box of hole #9.
"The fairway of hole #9 is so hot & windy" says Mr. Jason while Paul set his ball on his tee. Paul did a few practice swings then he hit his ball. This time it landed on the green and rolled a few yards and into the hole.
Paul screamed," Yes! I did a hole in one!"
Hole 14
Paul set up his ball on his tee as he gulped down Gatorade. Paul hit his ball whoosh! It flew less than two hundred yards then landed on the rough where it was dark & full of trees. Paul picked up his 3 wood then walked to his ball, cleared the leaves around his ball then he hit. The ball was heading to the right then luckily a gust of wind slightly blew it to the left. The ball landed on the fringe a few inches away from the green.
“Nice shot” says Mr. Jason to Paul. Mr. Jason & Paul walked to the ball of Paul.
Talking about the shot of Paul from the rough to the fringe, Paul decided to pitch his ball. Paul pitched his ball a little too strong but still landed it on the green about fifteen feet away from the hole. Paul putted his ball perfectly & his ball fell in the hole.
Hole 18
Paul & Mr. Jason walked to the tee box of hole #18 talking about the game of Paul. Paul did about ten practice swings then he hits his ball whoosh Paul’s ball landed on the fringe about 5 yards away from the hole. Paul was about to pitch his ball when he heard “fore!” Paul ducked as a ball flew about five inches above his head.
He then took two practice swings, pitched the ball as it landed 5 inches away from the hole. Paul did his final putt & the ball fell in the hole. Paul finished 14 over par (86).
Not bad for Paul.
Paul & Mr. Jason walk to the locker talking about the game of Paul. After Paul finished taking a shower Paul & Mr. Jason walked to a nearby restaurant & ordered 2 burgers & coke. After they finished eating Paul showed Mr. Jason a piece of paper that showed who are the people that will compete in the tournament.
“I am going to play golf every day until Friday since the tournament is on Sunday” said Paul to Mr. Jason.
MAY 6 2010
Paul played 9 holes today because he decided it was to hot & windy for Paul to play 18 holes. Paul finished 8 over par (44).
May 7 2010
Paul played 18 holes in a different course today. Paul finished 16 over par (88), which is not so bad for Paul.
MAY 7 2010
Paul decided not to play today because he needed to rest.

AWARDING
Later that morning, the commentator announced, “Our winner for today was Chris Grant! However, one of the tournament marshals saw Chris Grant steal the 7 iron of Paul Baylor in hole eighteen. Due to Chris Grants act of dishonesty he will be disqualified, and our second place winner will become the champion. The real winner is: Paul Baylor!”
Paul, surprised at the sudden turn of events, walked up to the stage to receive his trophy! Everyone cheered loudly, as he held the prize in his hands.

An Imaginary Friend
She is like another
me. That helps you in everything. She is always there by your side,
like someone that is part of you. You’re the only one that could
see her but no one else, like she was invisible. She could shrink
and grow. With her, you will always be safe and out of trouble.
She’s like your body-guard that is attached or with you
forever and ever. She’ll say good morning when you wake-up and
talks to you when you’re bored and says goodnight before you
sleep. But when you can’t go to sleep, she will sing your favorite
songs. She reminds you to do your homework like a caring teacher. When
you’re cold, she gives you a warm cuddle like a warm blanket. She makes you healthy, and cures your illness, just like a doctor. She is like a sister, that’s
with you everywhere and a friend you can always trust.

Ada's Vignettes
My Almost Built, (but not quite,) Room
If you look in the place the living room was, two cubes and a 3-D rectangle now call it home. The one on the right is my future room. If you look through the place a door should be, there are white curtains on the windows. They seem to be intangible, yet when you touch them, they aren’t. There are also wooden walls. I want to go there when there are no workers, so I can pick out where my mural will be, as well as my bed. Tita Sheila and I will paint a mural on the opposite wall from my bed. It will show a beach, with the aquamarine sea blending with sapphire, the deeper parts of the ocean. The rest of my room’s walls will be beige. Or maybe blue? I don’t have to decide now. By Daddy’s estimate, it will be finished next month, or a bit after that.
A Dinner With Family
In a sky blue room, a family of five chatters gaily about their day, around a small, brown table where a simple, albeit delicious meal is placed. The eldest child, a girl, proclaims, “I got a perfect score on my test today!” “Really? I must see it after dinner.” While the oldest one chatted about tests and scores and all those things to her mother, the middle one, a girl too, talked to her father about her day. “I played with Clara today.”
“That’s great!” the father declared. “What else did you do?” The youngest one hungrily wolfed down his spaghetti and meatballs. The family eventually wrapped up dinner with a prayer. The three siblings chased each other about while the father and mother watched them, heads leaning on the other’s shoulder. The scene was heartwarming.
On The Hill
I ran up the hill, the grass brushing my feet. My siblings were getting closer. I inhaled while I ran forth with renewed burst of speed. The summit was close. The wind lifted up my thick hair as I reached it. I spread my arms out, reaching for the blue sky above me.Tea, my sister caught up to me, panting. “Manang, that was quite a race.” She said in between breaths.
“I notice one of our childish trio is missing. Where’s Gusto?” She pointed down the hill. Gusto was only halfway there.
“While waiting, let’s look at the marvelous view.” Tea and I stared at the beauty before us.
“Huh. Never thought that concrete and nature would look good together.” said Tea. A pathway on our right led to a garden.
Farther off, I saw a forest, It’s trees like green paint on a perfect painting of a sunny morning in Tagaytay. “Ah, the missing piece to the puzzle. Look at this view.” I said as my youngest sibling appeared. Gusto looked at the majestic picture painted by nature’s palette. He looked up at me with the childish wonder he held in his eyes everyday.
“It’s awesome," he gasped. And in that moment, everything was perfect.
For One Moment
Everything was divine in every way it could be. The food was set. The guests were here. I was chatting with my best friends. We were talking about Minecraft, about Sims, about everything a 5th grader liked, at least in Assumption. I laughed as Bianca told a joke. Tori giggled as best as she could holding down soda in her mouth. My party was just great. My wish was that every single day could be like this. Everyday. That would be amazing.Penny
Penny
was a girl who loved to read. She was good in Reading and Language
and she was good in volleyball. The problem was, she had a hard time
making friends with people who weren't like her. She had one really
close friend. Her name was Cara. She also liked reading, volleyball
and music. She had other friends, but she had to act differently when
she was with them. Other people did not like it when she read books
in class. They also did not eat near her when she ate burgers. So, eventually she learned not to be herself when she was around them. She didn't read, or eat burgers, or sing songs.
One
day, her mentor approached her and asked, "Penny, wouldn't you be happier if you had more
friends? Close friends like Cara. Try and make a new one."
That afternoon, she went to the
library. When someone sat at her table, she felt scared.
Was
she going to tease Penny?
Instead,
she said, "Hi my name is Hannah!I love to read books!"
Penny smiled. She said,"I'm Penny.I love to read too!" They
both knew that they would both be good friends.
The
next day, Penny and Hannah met up with Cara. Penny
introduced Hannah to Cara and they became friends. At dismissal,
Hannah and Cara planned a surprise party for Penny. When Saturday
came, they put on decorations and bought a cake. Penny entered the
living room and her relatives shouted,"SURPRISE " Penny
was so happy. She felt like someone had given her one million
dollars! After the party , Penny had a sleepover with Cara and
Hannah. They listened to music, played games and finally slept.
In
the morning, they had waffles and juice for breakfast and went to the
volleyball court. There, she met a great volleyball player named Lucy
and instantly became friends. They all played volleyball together.
In
the following months, she became more sociable and made more friends.
She stopped pretending to be someone who she wasn't and people learned to accept
her for who she was. She became a leader. At the end of the
schoolyear, she had 3 awards: top 1 of the batch, Volleyball Varsity
and Leadership. She felt happy.

Rex
Hi. I’m a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Call me Rex. What I’m doing now? Speeding through outer space with an out-of-control rocket. I got up here like this:
Triceratops and I wanted to go to the big white ball in the sky. So we built this. A rocket called Jurassic Rulez. When I blasted off, (Tri was too chickensaurus to come.)I saw my home. It seemed like a little blue marble with brownish green blots. I turned away and looked at the ball. I was getting closer. Suddenly, I heard a THOCK! I looked outside. A rock had hit me, knocking me off course. I screamed, “AIEEEEEEEEEE!”. Ah well. Perhaps I’ll go home someday.
Several Million Years Later………
Well, it was bound to happen. I crashed. Back home. When I stepped out, I saw huge grey mountains. Monkeys, almost-furless monkeys. They were staring at me.
“Hello. Do you know where the dinosaurs are?” Before I could introduce myself, they screamed and ran off.
“How rude.” I thought.
All but one. He was wearing a few odd garments. The one on his top half was grey with yellow, green, and red squares. The ones on the bottom half were brown and black. The brown one was tight looking. The black one had holes.
“Hello there. What’s your name?”
“Rex.”
“Do you want to have a place to stay for the night?”
I shook my head. “No thank you. Where are the other dinosaurs?” I asked.
“They’ve all died. All but you.”
“You can’t be serious!”
“It’s true.” He smiled a sad smile. “Follow me.”
I nodded, my emerald scales catching the orange light. He walks, his feet making a soft sound. On the other hand, my green feet hit the road hard, causing small tremors.
“What’s your name?” I inquired.
“Lawrence.” He and I finally arrived at a small grey hill. He pointed to a field behind him. He told me I’ll be sleeping there.
“Good night, Rex.” I said nothing. As soon as he left, I rolled around in the soft pillow-y grass, pondering.
“Where are they now?” The question rolled around in my head as my eyelids got heavier than rock. My vision was swallowed up by the inky blackness. It wouldn’t last long. Soon it was pierced by an orange streak. I saw rocky ground-my home. I saw-“Triceratops?” I tried moving but I couldn’t. I was frozen.
The orange streak hit my home. Everything blew apart. All but me. There was nothing I could do. Nothing.
I jerked awake. Lawrence walked out of his hill. “Here’s breakfast.” He brought a large bit of meat. I didn’t touch it. I rolled over and thought again.
“If nobody’s like me, why bother living?” I raised a claw to my heart, about to welcome the promise of nothing. Oblivion.
“Rex, WAIT!”
I sighed. “Yeah, Lawrence?”
“Don’t take your life. Would your friends want this?” He gestured toward my claw. I put it down as a realization struck me like lightning.
“T-they wouldn’t.” I said, teary-eyed.
I took a big bite of the meat Lawrence had laid beside me. Later that day, Lawrence bought me to see some neighbors. After convincing them I wasn’t dangerous, they let me in. When I saw a small human, (Lawrence had told me what the monkeys called themselves,)I asked what his name was. “Gusto.” he replied.
Since the day I’ve come to call ‘Moving on day’ I’ve met a good number of friends. The humans are now quite used to having a dinosaur n their midst.
And me? I’ve learned that though there seems to be no hope at all, there always is.

My Dog Walker
The
name of my dog is Walker. He is a Pomeranian. When I first saw him, I
wanted him so badly. He was so cute and playful. On Valentines Day,
my mom surprised me with the most awesome gift ever, Walker. I was so
happy that I begged my mom to make him sleep in my room. Everyday, I
played with him after school and sometimes we would go to the park to
run around.
One Saturday afternoon, I decided to take him to my friend's house. My friend, Tyler, and his little sister Erin fell in love with him right away. Erin wanted him so badly that she wanted to buy him for P20,000. I knew that was a lot of money but to me Walker is priceless so I said no. But I let them borrow Walker for a day. As I was going home, I realized how much I missed Walker already. I decided to go back and get him. My friends understood me so they let me take him home.
Walker is my constant companion. When my parents are out, he's the one always with me. I'm so thankful to have Walker in my life. He means a lot to me and I love him very much.

Being Confident in Yourself
Early Monday morning, Mandy opens her wardrobe and gazes at her thousands of dresses. She has all the colors of the rainbow, like red, yellow, blue. Some of them are big and some are small. Some are dark and some are bright. But Mandy just picks her shirt and pants and goes to school. She notices that all the girls at school wore plain shirts and pants. Still, she was so quiet and shy and wouldn’t even say a word, like she doesn’t even have a mouth. In that case, she doesn't make a single friend.
The next day after school, it is her mom’s birthday, and it is really special for Mandy that she decides to wear her best dress. She and her family eat at a restaurant nearby. The restaurant is a few steps away from her house, so they walk home. She didn't notice that most of her schoolmates are at the same place. They see her wearing her beautiful red dress without Mandy even noticing.
When she goes to school the next day, she is shocked that most of the girls are wearing dresses. She is so shocked that her eyes almost fall out!
The next day she is so excited to wear a dress again. When she gets to school, she sees that everyone is wearing a dress too. She realizes that it's better to be yourself and be confident in who you are.

My Name
My name is Annika and it means "grace from God" in Russia. I'm not sure how my parents got it, but they chose it and liked it. Being called Annika makes me feel happy. I like my name because of its meaning and the feeling it gives me. Although it is a wonderful name, I always wanted to be named Mikaela because not a lot of people have this name. In my class there are six Annika's which is confusing for everyone.
-A.R.
My name is Felicia, and it means happy in Spanish. My name makes me feel like I am flying. I love my name because it makes me feel unique. I wouldn't want to be called anything else. My name was given by my mom, who named me after my grandmother.
If my name were a color it would be pink and red. If it were a mood it would be joyful and funny. If it were a season, it would be Summer and Winter at the same time. If it were an animal it would be a dog or a dolphin.
I love my name, no matter what.
- FdC
If you look up my name on Google, it would say that my name means dark. Sometimes, it would refer to the Adriatic Sea. My name is like a hump on a smooth road. It is different, just like me.
When I was born, my parents tried to think of a unique name for me. My mom loved to read and write, so she named me after a poet. When I was young, I hated my name. I wanted to be called Dominique, because it was more common. Now I appreciate my name, Adrienne, because it is unique, just like me.
Well, even if my name means dark on Google, it doesn't matter. I could add a new meaning: unique.
- A.M.
My name is Monica, and my name means counselor, advisor, supporter. I never got why my mom named me this. I don't think she thought of the pros and cons of naming a child Monica.
The pros being:
1. no one who is named Monica has ever been rude;
2. You'll be considered unique
The cons being:
1. anyone named Monica has never been mentally stable;
2. people will think your name is Monique;
3. if you live in the Philippines where there are no C's in the alphabet, your life sucks;
and a ton of others.
Monica has always been the anxiety-ridden, clean freak. The bad punchline to a joke. The rain and the watery mud puddles. The one who people think of as a nerd, or annoying, or shy or weird. A zero.
My name is Monica, and I've learned that even though your Mom may have given you a stupid name, and all the stereotypes that come with it, your name doesn't define you.

For Our Fathers
My Dad, who plays golf with me, likes online books, yoga and basketball, who does not watch movies, who taught me how to play golf, who reads to us and puts us to sleep on weekends, and takes care of me, is the best dad.
- M.A.
My Dad, who loves fashion, who tries hard, who loves us very much, who loves steak, and being fit, and sometimes has a bad temper, who, at the end of the day, will always be my one and only Dad.

I was in my Lolo's funeral and I never saw my Daddy cry before then.
For my Lolo,
who took out his teeth and had so many appointments,
who gave me paper when I was little,
who we kissed good night,
who loved reading the Bible every night,
who prayed to St. Therese,
who worked a lot,
who loved us,
and loved to sleep,
who stayed at home,
who said goodbye to us,
and who I love very much.
-F.dC.
My father, who talks like a businessman,
who tells really corny jokes,
who is there for me, is my favorite dad;
who I'm happy to be with when mom isn't around,
who loves me no matter what,
who is the math pro, who is scary when he teaches me math,
who sweats on his head when he eats spicy food,
is forever in my heart.
- M. M.
For Our Mothers
My mom is the first person I loved with all my heart. She was the one who introduced me to the world of learning, the one who taught me how to read, the one who taught me to appreciate everything.
Some people say I look nothing like my mom, some people say I look like a replica of her. Even if we don't look the same, we are family, and that is what's important.
My mom loves me, and I love her.
-A. M.
My mom, with her skinny bones and straight posture, who makes sure I am okay and comforts me in times of loss,
who has stayed strong for me, who makes sure she uplifts everyone who stays close to her,
who tells me when I'm being insane,
who loves me and my family unconditionally,
is my best friend.

On Turning Ten: Words Borrowed from Billy Collins
On Turning Twelve
The whole idea of it makes me feel like I'm mature,
like I've accomplished something.
You tell me it's too early to feel mature,
but I look back and remember every digit:
At 6, I was careless,
At 8, happy-go-lucky,
At 10, a weirdo.
But now, I am mostly writing reports and proofreading papers.
This is the beginning of the end, I say to myself,
as I close my highlighter.
It's time to say goodbye to jumping in water fountains,
time to turn the pages of my own book.
It seems only yesterday that I was the youngest one in my family.
Now I babysit my brother so his yaya can have dinner.
On Turning 12
The whole idea of it makes me feel like a prisoner
in a kind of paranormal life
an emotionless life
a hard task
I lie on my bed and think back on every digit:
At 1 I was extremely important
At 5 I was smarter
At 10 I was becoming dumber by the hour
Now I am mostly stressed,
happy only when I am home.
This is the beginning of puberty, of growing up,
I say to myself as I see younger children playing without a care
It's time to say goodbye to having no one to tell you what's right or wrong,
and to be responsible for your own choices,
time to listen to the annoying, "Do your homework"
"It's too late to stay up!" or "Go to bed!"
It seems only yesterday that I was able to do anything I wanted.
Now I'm stuck in this depressing state of responsibility.

On Turning 10
The whole idea of it makes me feel like I can't breathe,
a kind of happy thought with a downside,
an opposite thing, an irony
a book with a happy ending
and a really long plot.
You tell me it's impossible, but I just feel that way.
I can lie on my bed and remember every digit:
At 7, I was a banker who always saved money.
At 8, I was an author.
At 9, a comedian.
Now I am mostly a lawyer, who defends every decision.
This is the beginning of a new adventure,
I say to myself, as I think of the things I can do.
It's time to say goodbye to my old self,
time to change and turn a new age.
It seems only yesterday that I read my favorite books
And now it's time to move on to another great plot.

Welcome to the Writer's Workshop!
Here is where we will post your words, excerpts of your writing, vignettes and fully written stories, whatever you can find the courage to share.
Your words are windows to your lives at 9, 10, 11 and 12. Right now they may seem like a tiny contribution to the world of words, but frozen here in this space and time, are versions of you that you can share and revisit at anytime. Here, we document your current self: your imaginary friends as the antidote to loneliness, the friendships you cherish or long for, the excitement of turning a new number, or the lamentation of your childhood.
I have witnessed some of your heartaches, and some of your joys throughout these past weekends. And I consider it a privilege to be reminded of what it's like to be 9 and 10 and 11 and 12. I believe that your cyber audience will welcome the memories too.
So be brave. Believe in the power of your precious words, and share them.
